Decades ago, it was still possible to race on public roads. People weren’t discussing the safety issues, it was just “part off the game ” Those were the hay day’s of the Mille Miglia, Monaco and of course, the Targa Florio.
The Targa Florio was an open-road endurance race held in the mountains of Sicily. First raced in 1906, it was the oldest sports car racing event until it ended 1977. While the first editions consisted of a whole tour of the island, the track length in the race’s last decades was limited to 11 laps of 72 kilometers (45 mi) on the Circuito Piccolo delle Madonie.
Enjoy this beautiful footage below that show you the practice laps, these laps were done at race-pace on open roads.
